NE Neighborhood

Homes along a street, maybe a mile from the Capitol, in the direction opposite the White House along Constitution Ave., N.E.

Protest 1

Park near the Capitol ... The increased crowds brought many protesters of every background. Some sang songs about the sad state of American government ...

Protest 2

And others brought homemade signs. The message is self-explanatory.

Parade 1

Assorted floats and mainly dancers from more nations and cultural backgrounds than I could count participated in the Independence Day Parade along Constitution Ave., N.W., from 7th to 17th Street, with the reviewing stand at about 16th Street (near the White House).

Parade 2

For their float experience, the U.S. Marine veterans simulated the famous picture taken at Iwo Jima during World War II.

Parade 3

There were "American" entries in the parade as well, such as this one featuring show tunes, ...

Parade 4

... marching bands from New York (Pulaski High School), ...

Parade 5

... and Florida (unknown school), with some steppin'.

Parade 6

More cultural diversity. Notice the blue jeans. This parade was representative of many diverse Americans, including one of the last entries, which came down Constitution Avenue blasting musical praises to an Indian god (Krishna).

Parade 7

Being from Illinois, I needed to show the Abraham Lincoln float.

White House 1

As you walk to the White House (vehicular traffic is prohibited), you first notice the gates at one of the guard outposts.

White House 2

Then, the white color of the White House starts to shine through the trees. Most of the other buildings in Washington are not nearly as brilliant white in color, making the White House unmistakable.

White House 3

Detail of the wrought iron fence that surrounds the White House.

White House 4

The White House from the south side, gate along the pedestrian walk that used to be Pennsylvania Avenue. The guard on top of the White House was watching us through binoculars.

Monument 1

Security checked people who entered the Mall for the fireworks celebration, but once inside, there were plenty of seats with a spectacular view.

Monument 2

Having found a spot, two friends pose for a picture, an American flag wrapped around themselves, waiting for the fireworks to begin.

Monument 3

A young brother and sister walk around the Washington Monument, looking for a spot to sit.

Monument 4

The top of the Washington Monument just before the fireworks began. The U.S. Army band was playing John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" — the one with the piccolo obbligato.

Monument 5

The base of the Washington Monument, just before the fireworks began.
